Zimbabwe Embraces Artificial Intelligence for Inclusive Growth

In a significant move towards technological advancement, President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa launched Phase 2 of the High-Performance Computing Centre. This development was announced at the AIAfrica2025 Summit, an event that also marked the commencement of the second phase of the centre.

Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, Zimbabwe's Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, addressed the summit, emphasizing the arrival of Africa's moment in artificial intelligence. He compared AI to the mighty Zambezi River, cutting through barriers and reshaping the land forever. Minister Mavetera underscored the potential of AI in accelerating climate-resilient farming, healthcare, and education.

In line with this, Zimbabwe has announced its National AI Strategy, set to be unveiled in October 2025. This strategy will outline Zimbabwe’s roadmap for AI development, with a focus on transformative areas such as climate-resilient farming, healthcare, and education. The strategy aims to build domestic capacity, avoid digital dependency, and drive innovation through initiatives like the 1.5 Million Coders Program to equip Zimbabweans for an AI-driven economy.

Minister Mavetera reinforced Zimbabwe's vision to use AI as a driver of inclusive and sustainable growth. He emphasized that AI should create opportunities in Africa, not take jobs. He stated that Africa should present a united voice on the global AI stage.

The 1.5 Million Coders Program will continue as previously announced, a testament to Zimbabwe's commitment to building domestic capacity in AI. The National AI Strategy, upon its unveiling, will serve as a guiding document for this commitment.
