ZDF Brings HD to All Vodafone Cable TV Homes from November 18

ZDF is set to enhance viewing quality for Vodafone cable TV customers. From November 18, 2025, ZDF channels will be broadcast exclusively in HD on Vodafone's German cable network, marking the end of SD distribution.

This transition is part of ZDF's long-term strategy to focus solely on HD broadcasting. Vodafone, with almost all its cable TV households equipped with HD-capable devices, supports this move. Only a small percentage of users still rely on SD receivers.

To accommodate this change, Vodafone will introduce the NorDig-LCN standard. This will allow compatible receivers, including Apple TV, to automatically update and detect new channel positions. Additionally, Vodafone will display on-screen messages on ZDF's SD channels from October 7, 2025, alerting viewers to the upcoming shutdown. The date coincides with ZDF's satellite SD switch-off, when ZDF will cease transmitting its services in standard definition on Astra (19.2° East).

Discontinuing SD distribution will free up network capacity. This will enable Vodafone to provide higher broadband speeds and pave the way for future digital services. Vodafone is also reorganising frequencies used for digital TV and radio transmission to achieve this. The publisher of the oldest cable TV frequencies, freed up during Vodafone's cable network modernization, is Vodafone itself. These frequency reallocations are part of Vodafone's ongoing upgrade and modernization efforts in their cable and mobile networks.

Vodafone advises customers still using older, SD-capable hardware to upgrade to HD-capable devices, such as Apple TV, to enjoy the improved viewing experience. The transition to exclusive HD broadcasting on ZDF channels is a significant step towards better quality television and faster broadband services.
