YouTube's emergence as a cutting-edge content hub sparks strategic planning among major media companies, as they gear up for competition
In the world of entertainment, the future is being shaped as major players gather to discuss innovative approaches and strategies. The four-day BroadCast WorldWide 2025 conference, which concluded on Friday, was a hub of activity, with industry giants like YouTube, Disney+, and Coupang Play in attendance.
Charlie Moon, head of content business at Coupang Play, highlighted the streaming service's innovative approach by mentioning shows such as 'Boyhood,' 'Family Matters,' and 'Anna' as examples. Coupang Play, a South Korean streaming service operated by Coupang, Inc., is part of the company's expansion into video streaming. The service aims to take on projects with more courage and innovation, moving outside the traditional mold.
At the OTT Pavilion, Korean broadcasters and streamers like MBC, Wavve, Tving, and Coupang Play showcased their sports offerings with immersive, hands-on fan experiences. KBS, on the other hand, made a significant move by making classic dramas available in their entirety on YouTube.
YouTube, currently the number one podcasting platform, also announced its aim to become a next-generation platform encompassing podcasts and TV. The global head of TV & film advertising-based video-on-demand partnerships at YouTube, Fede Goldenberg, made these announcements during the conference. YouTube is focusing on serialized programming to mirror traditional TV and streaming strategies.
Meanwhile, Disney+ is focusing on select tentpole projects with cross-border potential. Choi Yeo-nu, director of local content at The Walt Disney Co. Korea, emphasized the importance of quality over quantity.
Interestingly, audiences are increasingly watching video podcasts on connected TVs. This trend was further highlighted as YouTube recently surpassed Spotify as the number one platform in podcast consumption.
International buyers were also scouting for fresh and export-ready titles at the event. SBS' "Queen Mantis," KBS' "Walking On Thin Ice" and "Raphael," a KOCCA-backed Mateo AI Studio project, were among the fresh content showcased at BCWW 2025.
As the streaming and podcasting landscape continues to evolve, events like BCWW 2025 provide a platform for industry leaders to discuss and shape the future of entertainment. With a focus on quality, innovation, and cross-border potential, the future of streaming and podcasting looks promising.
