Will the collaboration between OpenAI and Jony Ive's innovative gadget potentially break the pattern of AI underperformances?

Former Apple design chief Jony Ive has sold his stealth AI hardware startup, IO, to OpenAI. The acquisition, announced with a cryptic video, has sparked speculation about the future of AI devices and potential threats to Ive's previous employer, Apple.

In a $6.5 billion stock deal, OpenAI will acquire IO, founded by Ive and other Apple alumni, including Evans Hankey, Tang Tan, and Scott Cannon. Around 55 employees will transition to OpenAI, with Ive's design studio, LoveFrom, handling the company's design. However, Ive himself will not be joining OpenAI.

OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, described the IO device as something entirely new, potentially revolutionizing hardware and technology. Preliminary reports suggest the device will be pocket-sized, screenless, and aware of a user's life and surroundings. Analogies suggest it may not be a pair of smart glasses.

Some industry analysts view the AI device with skepticism, citing past failures of AI gadgets like the Rabbit R1 and the Humane AI Pin. Apple, known for its secretive approach to product development, has yet to comment on the development.

Jony Ive, in an interview with Bloomberg, argued that previous AI hardware failures resulted from poor product quality and a lack of new ways of thinking. He hopes to address these issues by applying his design expertise to the development of OpenAI's product.

While details about the IO device are scarce, expectations are high. A successful AI device from the collaboration between Ive and OpenAI could reshape the tech industry, integrating AI seamlessly into daily life and offering innovative, user-friendly interaction methods. The project is set to launch in late 2026.
