Getting the Green Edge: Electric Car Market dominance in Germany by Volkswagen

Germany's homegrown automakers are making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) sector within their borders, holding their ground against competition from China. As per reports released on Friday by the Federal Motor Transport Authority, between January and April, Volkswagen led the pack, selling over 35,000 EVs - a number no other manufacturer could match. Following closely, BMW and VW's subsidiary Skoda came in second and third, with 14,800 and 13,500 electric vehicles sold respectively.

About one out of five new cars from VW, BMW, and their subsidiaries now runs on electric power. Mercedes-Benz, however, is experiencing a slump. The Stuttgart-based automaker sold about 11% fewer electric cars compared to the previous year, pushing its electric vehicle share down to below 12%.

Where Mercedes struggles, Chinese manufacturers like BYD and MG trail significantly behind in Germany's EV market. They each only manage a few thousand sales. While BYD boosted its sales figures by fourfold to nearly 2,000 cars within a year, MG is on a downward spiral with only 3,200 electric cars sold. To dodge the import duties on Chinese EVs, which have been in effect since summer 2024 in the European Union, BYD plans to manufacture vehicles for the European market within Europe from 2025 onwards. BYD CEO Wang Chuanfu has hinted at the possibility of setting up a European centre in Hungary for this purpose.

Chinese manufacturers like BYD and MG have been growing in Europe, although they have not yet made a substantial impact in Germany's EV market.
