Volkswagen, in collaboration with Cerence, introduces the AI chatbot model similar to ChatGPT into the IDA voice assistant.
Volkswagen is set to revolutionize in-car technology by integrating the artificial-intelligence-based chatbot, ChatGPT, into its IDA voice assistant. This integration will be showcased at CES 2024, making Volkswagen the first volume manufacturer to make ChatGPT a standard feature in vehicles from the compact segment upwards.
The near-series Golf model will be one of the first vehicles to benefit from this innovative integration, underlining the innovative strength of Volkswagen's new products. Kai Grünitz, Member of the Board of Management Volkswagen Brand for technical Development, expressed his excitement about this collaboration.
The voice assistant can be activated by saying "Hello IDA" or by pressing the button on the steering wheel. Enabled by Cerence Chat Pro, the integration of ChatGPT offers a multitude of new capabilities beyond previous voice control. Users can control infotainment, navigation, air conditioning, and even answer general knowledge questions. In the future, AI will provide additional information in response to questions that go beyond this as part of its continuously expanding capabilities.
Stefan Ortmanns, CEO of Cerence, expressed pride in their partnership with Volkswagen and their ability to offer new innovations leveraging generative AI and large language models. He believes that this collaboration will redefine the in-car experience for Volkswagen drivers.
The integration prioritizes security and seamless integration with IDA's myriad capabilities, delivering ease of use for drivers. No new account, app installation, or activation of ChatGPT is required for the user.
From the second quarter of 2024, ChatGPT's chatbot will be offered in the USA integrated into Volkswagen models including the ID series (ID.3, ID.4) and the new Golf, enabling voice interaction and AI assistance directly in the vehicles. In addition, the new chatbot will be offered in conjunction with the latest generation of infotainment in the ID.7, ID.4, ID.5, ID.3, the all-new Tiguan, the all-new Passat, and the new Golf.
Fuel consumption and emission figures for the vehicles are only available in accordance with the WLTP and not the NEDC. For instance, the ID.7 model has a combined power consumption of 16.3-14.1 kWh/100 km and CO2 emissions of 0 g/km, according to WLTP standards.
This partnership with Cerence allows for the exploration of further collaborations to design a new, large language model-based user experience for Volkswagen's next-generation in-car assistant. Volkswagen is committed to pushing the boundaries of in-car technology and providing its customers with the best possible experience.
