Video game taxation under consideration?
The ARD Games Network, a new initiative by the German public broadcaster ARD, is set to make its mark in the gaming media space. Announced by the broadcasting association as a future focus for ARD, the network aims to reach new audiences and engage existing viewers more strongly by focusing on gaming.
However, details about the funding of the network, particularly the use of compulsory broadcasting fees (GEZ fees) for video game production, have not been publicly disclosed as of August 2025. For precise, up-to-date information, users may need to consult official ARD publications or announcements regarding the ARD Games Network and its budget/funding sources.
The ARD Games Network sees gaming as a future field with immense potential. The network was introduced at Gamescom 2025 in Cologne, and its stand at the event showcases published titles from the broadcasting stations that can be played. The first joint project of the network began on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Gamescom.
Bavaria's Minister-President, Söder, has expressed his support for the gaming industry, describing it as the "Formula 1 of digitization" and a good fit for Bavaria's high-tech location. In an Instagram post, Söder announced that the German Computer Game Award 2026 will be held in Munich, a strong signal of his commitment to the industry. Söder also plans to invest heavily in the gaming industry to make Munich the German gaming capital in the coming years.
The ARD Games Network allows individual broadcasting stations to exchange information about game development, target groups, and more, aiming to better utilize synergy effects, coordinate projects, and set strategic guidelines for future games projects. Initially, SWR, HR, BR, MDR, WDR, and NDR are involved in the network.
While the number of games to be funded by GEZ fees in the future is still unclear, the decision on which games to produce lies with the respective broadcasting stations. The ARD Games Network's ultimate goal is to reach new audiences and engage existing viewers more strongly, positioning itself as a significant player in the German gaming industry.
