Viasat enhances its worldwide Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities through the introduction of IoT Nano

Viasat, a leading global communications company, has announced the launch of its new IoT Nano connectivity service, powered by ORBCOMM's next-generation satellite IoT service, OGx. This service offers a cost-effective, low-power, and low-data satellite IoT connectivity solution for businesses worldwide, particularly in remote and challenging environments where traditional mobile networks may be unavailable or unreliable.

Key Features and Benefits

The IoT Nano service is designed to deliver a flexible, scalable, energy-efficient, and cost-effective satellite IoT solution. Some of its key features and benefits include:

  • Two-way Messaging Connectivity: The service enables effective monitoring and control of fixed and mobile assets across various industries such as agriculture, transport, utilities, mining, and environmental monitoring. It offers ultra-reliable global satellite coverage via Viasat’s L-band network.
  • Powered by ORBCOMM OGx: OGx is the evolution of the older IDP (IsatData Pro) standard, providing faster message delivery speeds, larger message sizes, and new hardware options.
  • Low Power and Energy Efficiency: The service optimizes power usage, leading to lower costs for solar panels, batteries, and enclosures, thereby enabling smaller, cheaper, and more sustainable IoT deployments.
  • Non-IP Messaging Protocol: IoT Nano is a two-way, non-IP messaging service that is optimized for satellite use, offering low latency and near-real-time data delivery.
  • Scalable and Flexible: The platform is massively scalable and supports embeddable modules, allowing integration into a variety of devices and applications globally.
  • Enhanced Operational Efficiency: By providing near-real-time visibility and richer, actionable data, IoT Nano empowers businesses to improve operations, increase situational awareness, and better manage distributed assets in remote or challenging environments.
  • Secure Communication: The service includes encryption to ensure secure data transmission over satellite links.

Industry Applications

IoT Nano can be used across various industries, making it a versatile solution for businesses with remote assets. Andy Kessler, vice president of enterprise and land mobile at Viasat, stated that the service provides flexible, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT connectivity to businesses in remote areas.

ORBCOMM's president of satellite IoT, Dave Roscoe, also commented, stating that OGx makes it possible for partners to enter new markets, expand use cases, and drive incremental growth.
