Verizon in Talks to Buy EchoStar's AWS-3 Licenses for 5G Boost
Verizon Communications is in talks with EchoStar to purchase AWS-3 licenses, potentially joining AT&T and SpaceX as buyers of EchoStar's wireless spectrum. The deal, if successful, could see Verizon reduce costs by acquiring spectrum now rather than waiting for the FCC's planned auction in 2026.
Negotiations between the two companies are reported to have taken place around September 30, 2025. EchoStar has valued its 'spare' spectrum at $9.8 billion, indicating the potential scale of the deal. Analysts from BNP-Paribas view the potential deal as broadly neutral for Verizon, a small positive for T/TMUS, and a small negative for US Cable players. EchoStar expects to hold $24.1 billion (€20.5bn) in cash after using spectrum sale proceeds to repay debt.
The acquisition of AWS-3 licenses from EchoStar could provide Verizon with valuable spectrum for carrying 5G wireless signals, potentially reducing costs and providing a strategic advantage in the market.
