UT Austin Launches 6G Research Center to Define Next Gen Wireless Tech

The University of Texas at Austin has spun out the 6G@UT research center from its Wireless Networking & Communications Group, which has previously contributed to 4G and 5G technologies. The new center aims to define 6G technology by native intelligence, transforming network service capabilities.

The 6G@UT center is a collaboration with industry giants such as Samsung and NVIDIA. These founding affiliates will fund at least two projects for three years, working alongside UT faculty and students. Intel and Samsung have already committed to supporting the establishment of the center, each funding a minimum of two projects.

Researchers at UT Austin are exploring the potential of 6G to anticipate network conditions, ensuring reliable links for latency-sensitive applications. Other major pillars of 6G include opening new spectrum, enhancing rural and urban coverage, and designing innovative network architectures. The center also plans to incorporate various sensors for improved situational awareness and network monitoring.

The 6G@UT center, spun out of the Cockrell School's Wireless Networking & Communications Group, is poised to shape the future of wireless technology. With support from industry titans like Samsung and NVIDIA, and funding from Intel and Samsung, the center will work to define and develop 6G technology, focusing on native intelligence and transformative network capabilities.
