Upcoming Enhancements for iOS 26: Delayed Feature Implementation Revealed

Apple's latest release, iOS 26, launched on Monday, brings several exciting changes, but not all the anticipated RCS features are included. The full implementation of RCS on iOS devices is dependent on the adoption of RCS Universal Profile 3.0, a standard that includes features not yet available in the current implementation.

In the meantime, Apple's Messages app, starting from iOS 18, now supports Rich Communication Services (RCS), enabling iMessage-like communication with Android devices. However, the current implementation of RCS on iOS devices is incomplete and lacks several key features, such as end-to-end encryption, "true" Tapback support, inline replies, message recall, and post-send editing. Apple has planned to introduce these features via an iOS 26 update by the end of the year.

The availability of these features on Apple devices is subject to future updates and the adoption of RCS Universal Profile 3.0. Google has been trying to persuade Apple to adopt RCS for years, but the adoption on Apple devices is not yet confirmed.

On a different note, Apple has also planned the introduction of digital IDs, initially in the United States. Delays are experienced in the implementation of digital IDs, while driver's licenses can already be integrated into the Wallet. It may take several releases and coordination with US authorities for digital IDs to be implemented. The hope is that you will only need an iPhone to identify yourself at the airport in the future ("Real ID").

In terms of AI, Apple's department has been experiencing a weekly loss of employees. Despite this, the improved Siri, expected to be released by early 2026, may not yet be fully LLM (dialogue)-based.

Lastly, the context-aware Siri announced for iOS 18 is not yet available. The improved Siri is expected to offer a more intelligent and personalised experience, but its exact features and capabilities are yet to be revealed.

Stay tuned for more updates as Apple continues to innovate and improve its offerings.
