Unveiling of M2 Pro and M2 Max: high-performance chips for enhanced workflows, courtesy of Apple's latest generation
Apple has announced the launch of its next-generation chips, the M2 Pro and M2 Max, designed to bring enhanced performance and capabilities to its Mac devices.
The M2 Max, with its 67 billion transistors, boasts 10 billion more than its predecessor, the M1 Max, and more than three times that of the M2. This powerful chip features a 12-core CPU, the same as the M2 Pro, and an up to 38-core GPU, making it capable of handling graphics-intensive projects that competing systems can't even run.
The M2 Max also includes two video encode engines and two ProRes engines, providing up to 2x faster video encoding compared to the M2 Pro. This makes it an ideal choice for professionals working with high-definition video content.
The M2 Pro, on the other hand, extends pro performance to the Mac mini for the first time. It has a 12-core CPU and up to 19-core GPU, and an immensely powerful media engine for hardware-accelerated video encode and decode, allowing playback of multiple streams of 4K and 8K ProRes video.
Both chips feature up to 96GB of unified memory and industry-leading power efficiency, ensuring smooth performance and long battery life. In fact, the new MacBook Pro with M2 Max achieves the longest battery life ever in a Mac - up to 22 hours.
Apple's latest image signal processor, combined with the Neural Engine, delivers better noise reduction and enhances camera image quality. The M2 Pro and M2 Max also include a next-generation Secure Enclave, ensuring best-in-class security.
M2 Max's GPU consists of up to 38 cores, offering graphics speeds up to 30 percent faster than M1 Max. This makes it an excellent choice for professionals working in graphic design, video editing, and gaming.
The Apple M2 Pro and M2 Max chips have been officially available since 2023, with products like the MacBook Pro 16.2-inch featuring the M2 Max already on sale. The M5 chip generation is expected between late 2025 and early 2026, but the M2 Pro and M2 Max are currently available in Apple devices.
By helping the new MacBook Pro and Mac mini meet Apple's high standards for energy efficiency, the M2 Pro and M2 Max not only deliver superior performance but also contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
