Unveiling of Apple Watch Series 8 and the fresh Apple Watch SE by Apple.
Apple has announced its latest operating system for the Apple Watch, watchOS 9, and new Apple Watch models - the Apple Watch Series 8 and the updated Apple Watch SE. Here's what you need to know.
New Features in watchOS 9
watchOS 9 introduces a range of new features designed to improve health and fitness tracking. One of the most notable additions is sleep tracking, which provides users with detailed sleep stage data in the Health app on their iPhone. The update also includes the AFib History feature, offering users with atrial fibrillation important information about their heart rhythm, including an estimate of how frequently it shows signs of AFib.
For those who enjoy outdoor activities, the Compass app has been redesigned with a new hybrid view, an orienteering view, and a Backtrack feature that helps users retrace their steps if they get lost or disoriented. The Workout app also sees an upgrade, with new in-session views such as Segments, Splits, and Elevation, providing more precise workout data.
The new Low Power Mode can extend the battery life of the Apple Watch Series 8 to up to 36 hours when paired with an iPhone. This mode temporarily disables or limits select sensors and features to conserve battery life.
New Apple Watch Models
The Apple Watch Series 8 includes a temperature-sensing feature for women's health, retrospective ovulation estimates, and Crash Detection. It starts at $399 (US).
The updated Apple Watch SE delivers the core Apple Watch experience at a more affordable price. It includes many of the features found in the Series 8, but without the temperature-sensing feature and Crash Detection. It starts at $249 (US).
Both the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch SE are now available for order, with availability starting on September 16.
Additional Features and Availability
watchOS 9 will be available on Monday, September 12, and requires an iPhone 8 or later and iPhone SE (2nd generation) or later running iOS 16. Not all features are available on all devices and in all regions.
The Medications feature in watchOS 9 helps users manage and track their medications, vitamins, and supplements. The Compass Waypoints feature allows users to mark a location or point of interest directly in the app.
International roaming is available on Apple Watch SE, Apple Watch Series 8, and Apple Watch Ultra, and all cellular models from Apple Watch Series 5 onward running watchOS 9. However, the search results do not provide information about the countries and regions where the AFib history feature in watchOS 9 is available or its regulatory approvals.
AFib History is intended for use by people ages 22 years or older who have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The new Low Power Mode temporarily disables or limits select sensors and features, including the Always-On Retina display, workout autostart, heart health notifications, and more.
watchOS 9, which is available for Apple Watch Series 4 and later, introduces new features like sleep stages, a first-of-its-kind AFib History feature, and an all-new Medications app.
Stay tuned for more updates on watchOS 9 and the new Apple Watch models.
