UK EV Charging Hours Double in Two Years, Regional Disparities Persist
The shift towards electric vehicles (EVs) continues apace, with significant changes in charging habits and infrastructure across the UK. The average duration of home charging sessions has risen, while the total hours spent charging EVs have more than doubled in just two years.
In 2024, the average home charging session lasts 3.6 hours, up from 3.2 hours in 2022. This increase reflects the growing number of EVs on the road and the need for more efficient charging solutions. Meanwhile, the total hours spent charging EVs has surged by over 139% from July 2022 to July 2024, indicating a significant rise in EV usage.
Regional disparities in charging infrastructure remain. Leeds tops the list with 718 home chargers, followed by Buckinghamshire, Birmingham, Cheshire East, and Barnet. However, Lochaber in the Scottish Highlands lags behind with just eight home chargers, highlighting the need for more equitable charging infrastructure across the country. Barriers to installing home chargers in some regions include less off-road parking and more flat complexes.
The growing demand for EVs has led to a substantial increase in charging hours and energy discharged, powering approximately 180,000 EVs in 2024 compared to just 2,000 in 2022. As the EV transition continues, addressing regional disparities in charging infrastructure and improving charging efficiency will be crucial to support the growing number of electric vehicles on UK roads.
