U.S. Space Force Explores Enhanced Military Communications with MGEO Program
The U.S. Space Force is exploring innovative ways to enhance military communications. The Maneuverable Geosynchronous Orbit (MGEO) program seeks to integrate larger GEO spacecraft, potentially by leasing older satellites, to support mobile ground troops in challenging environments. The program, with an IDIQ contract worth up to $900 million over 10 years, aims to overcome compatibility issues with commercial managed services.
The MGEO program, launched to provide resilient communication for mobile ground forces, is considering various solutions across different spectrum bands, including traditionally scarce ones like UHF, VHF, Ku, Ka, V, W, and optical. The Space Force is open to repurposing traditional large satellites nearing end of life, as well as acquiring new small or medium GEO spacecraft from commercial companies. A revised request for information was issued on Sept. 15, with multiple vendors expected to be selected for the indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity contract.
The Space Force's MGEO program is a significant step towards enhancing military communications in challenging environments. By considering a wide range of solutions and vendors, the program aims to address the shift in the commercial satcom market and ensure secure military waveforms are compatible with future systems.
