Xpeng Announces Cost Reduction Measures for G6 SUV
In a bid to make its SUV lineup more affordable, Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng has announced plans to reduce the cost of its G6 SUV. The cost-cutting measures are expected to reduce the production cost per vehicle by RMB 10,000 to 20,000 (approximately $1,400 to $2,800 USD).
The cost reduction will be achieved by switching some parts suppliers without compromising quality while keeping the appearance and functionality largely unchanged. This move is part of Xpeng's strategy to differentiate the G6 from its newer, higher-spec G7 SUV, which was launched recently.
The lower-cost version of the G6, now under the updated project code name F30be, is expected to go into production in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2025.
In addition to the cost reduction measures, Xpeng has also started localized manufacturing of the G6 in its new Indonesian manufacturing hub in Cikarang, Jakarta. This localization aims to reduce import costs, avoid tariffs, and streamline supply chains, potentially reducing per-unit costs by 15–20% in that market. This move supports making the G6 more affordable in Southeast Asia.
Xpeng currently operates two factories in Guangdong province: one in its headquarters city of Guangzhou and another in Zhaoqing city. However, the Wuhan factory project, which was announced in July 2021, has seen no new progress in the past few years due to rapid changes in the market environment.
The D03, another SUV from Xpeng, will replicate the positioning of the Mona M03 in the SUV market. Like the Mona M03, the D03 will have extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) variants. The Mona M03, previously owned by ride-hailing giant Didi, is Xpeng's lowest-priced model, with a starting price of RMB 119,800.
In the first half of the year, the Mona M03 delivered 86,351 units, accounting for 43.79 percent of Xpeng's deliveries during the same period. The G7, which was launched on July 3 with starting prices of RMB 195,800, RMB 205,800, and RMB 225,800, is significantly more expensive than the G6, with prices ranging from RMB 176,800 to RMB 198,800.
Xpeng's SUV lineup will include at least four models by next year, including the G6, G7, and the D03. The company can be found on Google News and has a Telegram channel.
