The Booming Economy of Yakutia: A Look at Railways and Exports

Train Yard Operations at Aldan Depot: An Insight into How Professionals Manage the Steering of Locomotives

In the heart of Siberia, Yakutia's coal mines churn out an astounding 49 million tons yearly - a staggering three times more than in the Soviet era. With such drastic increases in production, the need for efficient transportation becomes vital. Unfortunately, the Trans-Siberian Railway and BAM are struggling to keep up with the growing cargo flow.

Enter the Jalinda-Mohé international transport corridor project, proposed by JSC "Yakutia Railways". This ambitious plan aims to transport goods from Russia to China along a new, shorter route, relieving pressure on the Eastern polygon. The project includes the reconstruction of the abandoned Skovorodino - Reynevo (Jalinda village) railway line, set to commence in 2025.

With the launch of this project, the Yakutia Railways anticipates transporting approximately 9.6 million tons of cargo in 2025 - a 13.5% increase from the previous year, primarily focusing on coal, iron ore, LNG, and household goods. The passenger traffic within Yakutia is also on the rise, witnessing a 9% increase in 2024 compared to 2023, totaling 423 thousand passengers.

"Yakutia Railways" understands that expanding capacity is just the beginning; they need to enhance their technical potential as well. With a fleet of 69 locomotives currently in place, they are constantly working to maximize their efficiency and ensure the safe transportation of both goods and passengers by updating and improving their technologies.

A visit to the locomotive depot in Aldan uncovers a sophisticated network of modern technical workshops devoted to locomotive repair. The depot is evolving dynamically to meet modern challenges, developing a wide array of locomotives to address diverse needs.

Looking to the future, the focus is on the development of a railway line from Nizhny Bestakh to Magadan - a top priority for "Yakutia Railways". To achieve this goal, they are investing in increasing their locomotive fleet, training personnel, and improving their repair base.

The depot currently repairs five types of railway wheels and performs additional repair work, including the restoration of electric motors, diesel engines, automatic equipment, and other machinery. Gone are the days of outsourcing repairs; today, the Aldan depot accepts orders for wheel pair repairs from the entire Far East region, offering a wide range of repair products.

The depot's skilled technicians are consistently improving their knowledge and implementing new technologies - a key factor in the depot's success and ability to serve as a hidden gem in the rail industry.

Aldan, once known as a city of gold miners, is now proudly recognized as a city of railway workers, with over 1500 people employed by the company AO "AK "ZHDYA". expansion of the depot is imminent, and traction electric motors will soon be repaired there. This expansion will create around 50 new jobs in the near future.

In summary, Yakutia's booming economy demands efficient transportation, and the expansion of the locomotive depot in Aldan promises to increase cargo and passenger capacity, enhance technical potential, and bolster the region's rail industry.

Insights:

Expanding a locomotive depot typically involves increasing its capacity, improving infrastructure, and incorporating modern technology to support more efficient operations. This can lead to increased reliability, capacity for more cargo, and job creation. For routes like Yakutia to Magadan, factors such as harsh weather conditions, remote locations, and the need for robust infrastructure must be considered to ensure resilience and continuous operations under difficult conditions.
