The infamous 'Cabbage Man' from 'Avatar' receives a new 'Enchanted' Playing Card

The world of Avatar: The Last Airbender is coming to the realm of Magic: The Gathering with the upcoming release of the "Avatar: The Last Airbender" set. Wizards of the Coast recently hosted the first preview stream for this exciting new set, which features four new bending mechanics that reflect the elemental powers from the series: Airbending, Earthbending, Firebending, and Waterbending.

Key mechanics include:

  • Airbending allows you to exile permanents you control temporarily and return them later by paying 2 generic mana instead of their normal cost. This creates synergy with spells or abilities that cast from exile. The card Appa, Steadfast Guardian is a mythic legendary creature with flying and airbending exile-return ability, plus synergy as an Ally.
  • Earthbending animates lands into creatures, somewhat like the existing "awaken" ability. If the Earthbending animated permanent were to die or be exiled, the land returns to the battlefield tapped, preserving card advantage since you don't lose the land.
  • Firebending ties to generating mana as energy that enhances combat or enables instant-speed plays. Cards like Fire Lord Zuko illustrate firebending's focus on mana and combat interaction rather than direct damage or firebreathing.
  • Waterbending mechanics are among the elemental abilities revealed, featuring unique interactions related to the water element from the show.

Notable characters featured as cards include Appa, Steadfast Guardian, Fire Lord Zuko, and the striking double-faced card headlining the set, Avatar Aang // Aang, Master of Elements, illustrated by the series co-creator. Other fan favorites like Toph, Sokka, Katara, and Zuko are included, showcasing various bending types and Ally synergies.

This blend of unique elemental bending mechanics and iconic Avatar characters introduces new strategic layers while maintaining Magic's established gameplay framework. The set is a Standard-legal Universes Beyond release scheduled for November 21, 2025, and includes familiar Magic mechanics returning, such as Lesson spells, Shrine and Ally creature subtypes, and double-faced Saga cards. Emphasis on Ally creatures as a tribal synergy theme is also evident.

In addition to the Avatar: The Last Airbender set, fans can look forward to the Marvel's Spider-Man set, set to release on September 26. The Avatar: The Last Airbender set in Magic: The Gathering will release on November 21, featuring characters like Aang, Zuko, Sokka, Katara, Toph, Princess Yue, Appa, Momo, and Fire Lord Sozin.
