The iconic musical adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" will hit the road in 2026.
In a heartfelt tribute, the musical "Romeo & Juliet - Love is Everything" will embark on a tour across German cities starting from August 2026, following its successful run in Berlin. The production, which premiered in March 2023, has captivated over 400,000 spectators with its unique blend of pop songs and arias.
The musical, a new adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, has been co-created by Ulf Leo Sommer and Peter Plate, who have previously collaborated on productions such as "Ku'damm 56." The work of the pop duo Rosenstolz, to which Peter Plate once belonged, plays a significant role in this production.
Tragically, one of the members of Rosenstolz, Anna R., passed away unexpectedly in her apartment in March. Her memory lives on in the musical, with Peter Plate expressing his wish for the audience to remember Anna R. when hearing Rosenstolz hits like "Liebe ist alles" and "Wie weit ist vorbei" during the tour. A memorial for Anna R. was created at the Theater des Westens, where "Romeo & Juliet - Love is Everything" is performed.
In the musical, Romeo's friend Mercutio is in love with Julia, a character portrayed as wilder than in the original work. Laura Schatz took over the role of Julia after Anna R.'s passing.
Peter Plate found it enjoyable to reimagine the material for "Romeo & Juliet - Love is Everything." He stated that writing the musical allowed him to feel like a teenager again, immersing himself in Romeo and Juliet. The creators claim to tell the perhaps most famous love story in the world in a way that has "never been told before."
The production will continue to be shown in Berlin until the end of February 2026. After its Berlin run, the musical will be seen in Austria (Vienna) and Switzerland (Zürich). Performances are planned in Düsseldorf, Munich, Duisburg, Baden-Baden, Bremen, and Frankfurt.
