Pricing and Discounts

Tesla introduces Model S and X updates featuring extended driving distances, accompanied by increased costs.

Tesla has made some changes to the pricing of its Model S and Model X in both Canada and the United States. In Canada, the Model S AWD now costs CAD 139,990, an increase of CAD 6,000, while the Model S Plaid is priced at CAD 159,990, up by CAD 5,000. The Model X AWD costs CAD 149,990, a rise of CAD 9,000, and the Model X Plaid is priced at CAD 169,990, with a CAD 8,000 increase[1]. In contrast, Tesla is offering discounts in the U.S. to boost sales before federal incentives expire. Model X buyers can enjoy up to 9.5% off, approximately USD 8,300, on new inventory[4].

Design and Features

The latest updates include several design and feature enhancements. The Model S and Model X now come with a front bumper camera, which enhances visibility and supports Full Self-Driving (FSD) performance. There are also fine adjustments to the bumpers to improve aerodynamics and driving comfort. Additionally, the interiors have been refined for more comfort and a premium feel[1]. Other improvements include upgrades to safety and visibility, such as adaptive driving beams to improve night visibility[1]. A new paint option, "Front Blue", is available for the updated models. The updated models' interiors are quieter due to reduced wind and road noise, and more effective active noise cancellation[1].

Performance and Range

There are no reported changes in the range of the Model S and Model X with these updates. The focus remains on the drivetrain's efficiency and user experience enhancements rather than extending the range[1]. However, the Model S Plaid now costs USD 99,990, and the Model X Long Range and Plaid variants are priced from USD 89,990 and USD 104,990 respectively[2]. The latest updates to the Model S and Model X include up to 660 km of range in one of the sedan's variants[2].

Additional Perks

Buyers of Model S and Model X who purchase Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can receive one free upgrade, which is the highest-priced exterior or interior option[4]. The updated models also offer dynamic ambient lighting with unique animations in their interiors[1]. Ride quality has been improved with new bushings and a revised suspension design[1].

These updates come at a time when Tesla's sales of the Model S and X have been decreasing, with estimates suggesting global sales fell below 50,000 units in 2024[3]. The Model S, Tesla's first flagship sedan, was produced in 2012, and three years later, Tesla produced its first family SUV, the Model X, featuring iconic gull-wing doors[3]. Riz Akhtar, the founder of carloop, a company aiming to reduce transport emissions in Australia, is a mechanical engineer who has a passion for EVs and currently drives a red Tesla Model 3.
