Tesla, the leading electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has made significant strides in its Indian expansion. The company has opened a new showroom in Delhi's Aerocity, serving as a booking and experience centre for the Model Y electric SUV, and leased a commercial space in Gurugram for vehicle servicing and customer support.

The Aerocity showroom spans approximately 8,200 sq ft and boasts four V4 Superchargers, each capable of 250 kW DC charging. This marks Tesla's second showroom in India, following its retail debut in Mumbai last month.

In Gurugram, Tesla has leased a commercial space of about 33,000 sq ft on Sohna Road. The lease terms for this facility are reportedly ₹40 lakh per month for a duration of 9 years. This space will be used for vehicle servicing, repairs, and customer support.

Tesla's expansion plans in India are far-reaching. The company is aggressively rolling out its Supercharger network, with new stations planned across major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, and Ahmedabad. The Gurugram Supercharger site is expected to open soon as part of this effort.

Besides showrooms and Superchargers, Tesla is expanding its service capabilities. Plans include mobile service, remote diagnostics, dedicated service centers (with one coming soon in Bengaluru), and Tesla Approved Collision Centers for vehicle repairs.

Deliveries of the Model Y, imported fully built from Tesla’s Shanghai factory, are expected to start by September 2025, focusing initially on Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, and Gurugram customers. The high import duties lead to premium pricing for the Model Y in India, placing it in competition with luxury brand EVs such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi.

In addition to the Aerocity and Gurugram properties, Tesla has also registered a 9-year lease for a unit in Gurugram's Orchid Business Park. The starting rent for this space is Rs 17.22 lakh per month.

The rent for the Gurugram property in Aerocity will escalate by 4.75% per annum, while the rent for the Gurugram property on Sohna Road will increase by 15% every 36 months.

These developments reflect Tesla’s strategic commitment to building a comprehensive EV ecosystem in India, centred on product availability, charging infrastructure, and after-sales support. Tesla's expansion in India is a significant step towards promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and contributing to India's goal of becoming a net-zero emissions economy by 2070.

In the context of Tesla's aggressive expansion in India, the company is not only focusing on showrooms and Superchargers but also investing in technology-driven service capabilities, such as mobile services, remote diagnostics, and Tesla Approved Collision Centers. Furthermore, Tesla has noted an intent to delve into the Indian real-estate sector, as evidenced by the lease of a commercial space in Gurugram's Orchid Business Park for an estimated rent of Rs 17.22 lakh per month.
