Tech giant Google capitalizes on Star Wars Day to unveil the long-awaited Pixel Fold, their innovative new foldable smartphone device.
The tech world is buzzing with excitement as Google prepares to unveil its latest innovation – the Pixel Fold, also known as the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. The much-anticipated device is expected to be officially revealed at Google I/O 2023, starting on May 10.
The Pixel Fold is rumoured to boast a host of impressive specifications, setting it apart from its competitors. Google’s new 3-nanometer Tensor G5 chip is said to power the device, offering a moderate performance boost and improved AI processing. The device will come with 16GB of RAM and storage options ranging from 256GB, 512GB, to an unprecedented 1TB.
The Pixel Fold's display is another area where it is expected to excel. The cover display is expected to measure 6.4-inches, slightly larger than the previous generation’s 6.3-inch. The inner display, an 8-inch OLED, is anticipated to feature a 120 Hz refresh rate. The cover display's peak brightness is expected to reach up to 3,000 nits.
Battery life is a concern for many foldable device users, but the Pixel Fold seems to address this issue. It is expected to pack a 5,015 mAh battery, larger than the Galaxy Z Fold 4’s 4,400 mAh and previous Pixel Fold models. The device is also said to support faster charging, with 23W wired and 15W Qi2 wireless charging.
In terms of cameras, the Pixel Fold is expected to feature the same setup as last year’s Pixel foldable, including a 48 MP main, 10.5 MP ultrawide, 10.8 MP telephoto with 5x zoom, and two 10 MP selfie cameras (one for the outer and one for the folding display).
The Pixel Fold is also expected to boast a high level of durability, with an IP68 rating, the highest water and dust resistance level achieved by a foldable phone so far. Connectivity-wise, the device is expected to support 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC.
As for the price, while official pricing has not been confirmed, it is expected to be premium, likely in the range competitive with other high-end foldables like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. Storage options up to 1TB may push the price higher for top variants. The release is expected to follow shortly after the Google I/O 2023 unveiling, usually in the summer or early fall 2023.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold will run on Android 16, featuring anticipated foldable-specific optimizations such as split-screen, windowed multitasking, and an app dock. However, there is currently no indication that stylus support will be included, unlike some competitors.
The Pixel 10 Pro Fold aims to outperform rivals like the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in battery capacity, IP rating, and display specifications. Stay tuned to Gizmodo for the latest news about the Pixel Fold and Google I/O 2023.
