Sungrow and EP Produzione Sign Contract for a 220 MWh Battery Storage Venture in Sicily
In a significant move towards a more sustainable energy future, Sungrow, a leading inverter solution supplier for renewable energy, and EP Produzione, a key player in the Italian energy market, have joined forces for a utility-scale Energy Storage System (ESS) project in Trapani, Sicily.
The project, scheduled to commence in September 2025, will be EP Produzione's behind-the-scenes effort in the 220 MWh battery storage system. Sungrow, with its extensive experience in Europe, will provide the PowerTitan 2.0 solution for this ambitious undertaking.
Massimo Bracchi, Country Manager Italy for Sungrow, expressed his enthusiasm, stating that the PowerTitan 2.0 will support the energy transition by offering a latest-generation ESS platform. The PowerTitan 2.0's features make it suitable for the increasing demand for grid flexibility in Italy and the ambitious energy transition goals.
The PowerTitan 2.0 solution consists of 44 units, designed to improve grid stability and enable the integration of renewables. It boasts an all-in-one AC-DC block design, reducing installation time, and a highly integrated architecture, liquid cooling, and advanced control functions. These features, combined with the system's pioneering technology, help reduce both CAPEX and OPEX costs.
Sungrow's operations in Europe span over 18 years, with over 750 employees, more than 25 local offices, and two R&D teams based in Europe. They operate with a dedicated local structure and a consolidated European network, including a recent office in Milan.
Luca Alippi, CEO of EP Produzione, emphasised the importance of this collaboration, stating that the agreement with Sungrow is an important step in their journey towards a more flexible and sustainable energy system. EP Produzione has already launched three electrochemical storage projects in Italy, and this project will provide services such as frequency regulation, peak shaving, and balancing in a highly populated region.
This project is strategically important for the growth of PV in Sicily and Europe. Sungrow conducted the world's largest BESS burn test for the PowerTitan 2.0, ensuring exceptional safety, further underscoring their commitment to the project's success.
Sungrow has established a team of experienced professionals to support projects in Italy, demonstrating their dedication to local partnerships. The company's Country Manager, Bracchi, expressed his optimism, stating that the project is the first for Sungrow in Italy using the PowerTitan 2.0 solution, but certainly not the last.
This collaboration between Sungrow and EP Produzione marks a significant milestone in the energy transition, showcasing the potential of renewable energy storage systems to stabilise grids and integrate renewables effectively.
