In 2023, the solar energy industry is experiencing a surge in growth, driven by technological advancements, supportive policies, and rising global demand for clean energy. This expansion is projected to continue at an annual rate of around 11.95% to 15.11%, with installed capacity expected to more than double by 2030.

The global solar market is set to grow at approximately 12% CAGR from 2023 to 2033, fueled by technology improvements and expanding end-user adoption. The U.S. solar market, in particular, is expected to reach over 400 GW capacity by 2030, growing at 15.11% CAGR, supported by federal incentives like the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) which provides tax credits and boosts domestic manufacturing.

This growth is transforming solar power into the largest renewable electricity source, surpassing hydropower in the coming years, and is a major driver of economic growth and job creation. Solar employment is growing rapidly, with a nearly 6% increase in 2023 and utility-scale solar jobs up 6.8%, and installation jobs projected to surge 48% through 2033.

However, challenges remain. High initial installation costs and limitations in energy storage technology constrain adoption speed and reliability. Solar module conversion efficiencies, though improving, still lag behind theoretical limits, impacting overall system performance.

The decentralized nature of solar energy offers unique potential to serve remote and underserved communities, improving energy access and resilience while lowering carbon emissions. A just and equitable transition framework is critical to ensure that vulnerable populations and developing countries benefit from solar deployment and are not disproportionately burdened by transitions away from fossil fuels. Progressive policies and international cooperation are emphasized as vital to dismantle barriers, accelerate renewable adoption, and secure equitable access.

In the U.S., states like Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana are seeing increasingly vocal opposition to rural solar farms due to the sacrifice of prime agricultural farmland. Conversely, abandoned golf courses and snaking cycle paths have found themselves sheathed in solar arrays across the world.

A concern arising from this rapid growth is the management of solar waste streams, particularly in regions of the Global South. Just 10% of solar panels are recycled in the U.S., and only 11% of global glass used in solar panels is recycled.

Looking ahead, the solar energy industry is poised to be a major pillar of a global low-carbon and inclusive energy future. By 2050, energy captured from the wind and sun could be generating nearly 70% of global electricity. Intriguingly, within 10 years, solar may become the leading source of U.S. energy, and solar may be India's cheapest energy source in a decade's time. However, the success of this transition hinges on overcoming cost and technical barriers and embedding energy justice and equitable access into policy and deployment strategies.
