Stuttgart Congress Aims to Revitalize City Centers

On June 23, 2025, a significant gathering took place in Stuttgart's House of the Economy, focusing on the future of city centers and local centers. The congress, titled 'Rethinking city centers and local centers', was organized by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism, and the Ministry of Spatial Planning and Housing. Around 200 representatives from various sectors attended the event.

The congress centered around a study on 'Overcoming obstacles to the implementation of multifunctional city centers/local centers'. It explored real estate management and visitor reasons, aiming to make these spaces more attractive and livable. Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labor and Tourism, stressed the importance of fresh ideas and collaboration among actors to strengthen city centers.

A panel discussion delved into various approaches to enhance the multifunctionality of these centers. It covered changing retail sectors, digitization, and diverse population demands. Nicole Razavi, Minister of Spatial Planning and Housing, emphasized the role of city centers as places where people enjoy living, working, and shopping. The event provided an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange ideas, gather inspiration, and contribute their own insights. The expert group 'Fachgruppe Stadtzentren' played a crucial role in driving these discussions.

The congress in Stuttgart highlighted the need for innovative solutions to boost the attractiveness of city centers and local centers. With urban development funding as a key pillar of support, municipalities can transform their centers into more livable spaces. The event fostered collaboration and idea-sharing among representatives from municipalities, economic associations, science, and state politics.
