Starlink service, operated by Elon Musk, was shut down in 2022, thereby sabotaging the counteroffensive efforts of the USC.

In the midst of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Elon Musk's SpaceX reportedly ordered a halt to Starlink satellite internet service in strategically important areas, including around Kherson, during Ukraine's 2022 counteroffensive against Russian forces. This decision, which caused a communications blackout, disrupted Ukrainian military operations, particularly affecting drone surveillance and artillery coordination.

The halt of the Starlink service left front-line Ukrainian troops without connectivity, directly contributing to the failure of an attempt to encircle Russian troops near Beryslav. Although Ukrainian forces later reclaimed Kherson and other territory, the outage during the critical phase delayed their efforts and raised concerns among Ukrainian and U.S. military officials.

The specific impacts of this disruption included the cessation of drone operations, difficulties in targeting for artillery units relying on Starlink for fire control, and the disabling of drones used for surveilling Russian positions. The Ukrainian military's counteroffensive was also disrupted as a result.

However, it's important to note that the company's continued support for Ukraine includes providing internet services. A company representative denied the claims that Starlink had halted internet services in strategically important areas in Ukraine, with the specific post being available on social media platform X.

The decision to halt the Starlink service reportedly took SpaceX employees by surprise. Some sources suggest Musk's motivation was fear that Ukrainian gains might provoke a Russian nuclear response.

Despite these disruptions, Starlink's services in Ukraine are also reported to have helped in destroying Russian drones, according to a separate report.

  1. The halt in Starlink service caused significant challenges for Ukrainian forces, including limitations in using technology for drone operations and artillery coordination during the counteroffensive.
  2. SpaceX's dispute regarding continuing the Starlink service in strategically important areas has raised questions about its potential role in sports-like strategic maneuvers, as some sources speculate Musk might have been influenced by fear of sparking a response that could escalate into a nuclear conflict.
