SpaceX launch site in Texas granted city status, now known as Starbase

WHOOPTY-FREAKIN'-DOO, STARBASE CITY'S OFFICIAL AND IT'S ALL COURTESY OF ELON MUSK'S SPACEX!

That's right, folks! A tiny town in South Texas has now officially transformed into the interstellar metropolis of Starbase. The town, previously known as Boca Chica, became a city by popular vote and is now the stomping ground for SpaceX's lunar and Mars exploration activities, thanks to the space agency's executive badass, Elon Musk.

In a whopping 212 to 6 landslide, the town's, er, city's residents - mainly SpaceX employees - voted in favor of the change. Secretary of State John Scott, Cameron County’s top election official, confirmed the results.

Musk, who has seen his fair share of public backlash lately, announced the news on an unwashed, ugly duckling social media platform, writing, "Starbase is now a real city!" You know, just like that - no fanfare, no hashtags, no tweeting his emotions away. Classic Musk.

The new city, which sits on about 1.5 square miles of dim sum trails and prefab trailers, is set to be a launchpad for SpaceX's contract with the Department of Defense and NASA, which aims to catapult our astronauts back to the moon and eventually to Mars. Have you booked your one-way ticket yet? I'm still waiting for my military clearance, so I'm currently stuck here on good ol' planet Earth.

Musk floated the idea for Starbase in 2021, and with such a dedicated workforce (the town only had about 283 eligible voters), it was only a matter of time before the wheels of bureaucracy cranked out a city-sized trophy for the SpaceX team.

The new city status is a personal victory for Musk, who has faced a bit of heat in recent years following his Usain Bolt-esque sprint towards the white house with a chainsaw under his arm. #BurnTheBudget. Meanwhile, his car company, Tesla, has been skidding on profits at a rate that would make a novice snowboarder blush.

SpaceX's ongoing support from local officials appears to have allowed for the creation of this private company town. However, critics worry that SpaceX's newfound power may give Musk the authority to swoop in and close a popular beach and nearby state park for launch operations. The potential for chaos (and missing out on sunbathing) has led to a growing chorus of naysayers.

SpaceX has still managed to skirt answers regarding the "why" behind their quest for a bona-fide city. SpaceX General Manager Kathryn Lueders wrote in 2024 that she felt the need to "grow Starbase as a community." Cryptic? Absolutely. But if I were a betting man, I'd put my money on domination. I mean, it's Elon Musk.

As for the backlash, well, that's just the cost of doing business on Mars. Or so I hear.

  1. The incorporation of Starbase, a small town in South Texas, has revolutionized the local economy, with SpaceX's activities providing numerous jobs in the environment of space-and-astronomy and technology-oriented businesses.
  2. Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, has played a critical role in Seattle-like city transformation, propelling Starbase to the forefront of space-and-astronomy business, finance, and science.
  3. The recent decision to upgrade Boca Chica to a city will likely create a significant impact on the environment, as it raises questions about the preservation of nearby wildlife habitats and the efficient management of resources during rapid urban growth.
  4. The new city status of Starbase will foster collaborations between multiple private businesses and government entities, as they work together to further advance space exploration and usher in a new era of business innovation.
  5. Critics express concerns about Musk's power, challenging whether the city-building endeavor could lead to the stripping of public resources and potential encroachment on local communities, as demonstrated by the potential closure of popular beaches and state parks for launch operations.
  6. The financial backing that SpaceX receives from investors and government entities will likely determine the extent to which the private company town can sustain itself economically and maintain a harmonious relationship with its surrounding communities.
  7. As SpaceX continues to make remarkable strides in the field of space exploration, Texan cities throughout the state, as well as other regions, may look to Starbase as a case study for future urban development projects, leading to a potential space-centric revolution in city planning and construction.
