Sony's Wireless Headphones WH-1000XM6 offer impressive performance – however, they carry an unwelcome trade-off
When I'm not writing reviews or articles about all things AV, I'm searching the internet high and low for the best wireless headphones we've tested that are on sale.
Over the years, I've listened to hundreds of pairs and developed an eye for price shifts in the market. The typical cycle goes like this: a new pair of wireless headphones launches at full price, the old pair drops in price, then continues to drop during big sales events, before eventually being discontinued and replaced by a new model.
Right now, the wireless noise-cancelling headphones market is heating up—Sony's WH-1000XM4, WH-1000XM5, and WH-1000XM6 models are all on sale at the same time. While it's common to have a new and old model running concurrently, it's unusual to see three models together.
Fortunately for Sony and consumers, these three pairs cover a range of price points. The WH-1000XM4 can be yours for £179 (though we've seen lower prices), the WH-1000XM5 are going for approximately £249, and the WH-1000XM6 are priced at £399. The XM6 have yet to be discounted, but who knows if they will appear in the Amazon Prime Day deals scheduled for early July?
My hunch is that the arrival of the XM6 means the WH-1000XM4 will soon be phased out. It's a shame because they still offer great value for those who don't want to pay flagship prices. If they get discontinued this year, it'll be interesting to see what happens to the WH-1000XM5. I wouldn't be surprised if they drop to around £199 by Black Friday in November.
Sony's strategy is smart—keeping multiple generations available simultaneously to cater to a wide range of budgets and preferences. The older models may not be top-of-the-line, but they still deliver good sound, noise cancellation, and call quality to compete with newer models at their respective price points.
I've tested all three Sony pairs, and despite being almost five years old, the WH-1000XM4 still packs a punch. The XM6 and XM5 might have shifted the sonic game forward, but the XM4's audio quality remains detailed, dynamic, and musical. And with their lower price point, you could say they're still a bargain.
So, if you're on the hunt for a pair of wireless headphones, keep an eye on WH-1000XM4 prices in the coming weeks and months to see if they drop any further. You might just find yourself a stellar deal.
