Social media giant Instagram rolls out long-awaited additions to its platform after years of user requests

Instagram Introduces Reposts Feature and Location Sharing

Social media platform Instagram has rolled out two new features – Reposts and Location Sharing – aiming to enhance user engagement and content discovery.

The Reposts feature allows users to share public Reels and feed posts from other accounts directly to their own followers’ main feed. Reposted content appears in a dedicated "Reposts" tab on the user’s profile, alongside the Reels and Tagged Photos tabs. This new functionality is designed to boost creator reach and increase user engagement by making content curation and sharing more seamless.

When a user reposts a Reel or feed post, Instagram may recommend the reposted content to followers of the original creator, potentially exposing it to users who do not follow the original account. This can significantly expand the audience of the original content beyond just the creator’s followers.

The original creator receives credit automatically for the reposted content, helping maintain attribution and awareness of the source of content. Reposts can thus help creators increase their visibility and reach by leveraging their followers’ repost actions to extend beyond their direct audience.

It is important to note that only posts from public accounts can be reposted; private content cannot be reshared via this feature. Users can add their own comment in a "thought bubble" when reposting, allowing them to express their thoughts or add context to the content.

The extent to which reposts will be visible to followers is uncertain, as Instagram’s algorithm may still play a role in surfacing content. However, all reposts will be credited to the original poster, ensuring proper attribution.

In addition to the Reposts feature, Instagram has also introduced a new location sharing feature. Users can now choose with whom they share their location, including Friends, Close Friends, Only Selected Friends, or nobody. This opt-in feature allows users to control their location sharing settings and decide who can see their location on a map interface.

Currently, the Reposts feature is only available for US users to share their location. However, Instagram is reportedly planning to roll out this feature worldwide in the near future.

In conclusion, Instagram’s new Reposts and Location Sharing features are set to revolutionize the way users interact with content and each other on the platform. By making content curation and sharing more accessible and location sharing more controllable, Instagram aims to boost user engagement and foster a more connected community.

The Reposts feature on Instagram enables users to directly share public Reels and feed posts from other accounts to their main feed, enhancing creator reach and increasing user engagement. Meanwhile, Location Sharing allows users to selectively decide who can see their location on a map interface, offering more control over privacy settings.
