Snapchat Introduces Paid Memories Storage Plans
Snapchat, the popular photo and messaging app, has announced a significant change to its Memories feature. The company will now charge users to store older photos and videos, a move that has sparked frustration among some longtime users.
Drew Benvie, CEO of social media consultancy Battenhall, sees this as an 'inevitable' evolution of platforms. Snapchat, with over 900 million monthly active users, is joining competitors like Instagram and TikTok in monetizing storage.
The change will affect users with more than 5GB of saved Memories. In the UK, Snap offers a 100GB public storage plan for £1.59 per month. In the US, users exceeding the limit will be offered a 100GB storage units near me plan for $1.99 per month. Snap has not yet disclosed UK pricing but plans a global rollout.
Users can download their existing content and will be given 12 months of temporary storage. However, some users have criticized the move, calling it 'unfair' and 'greedy'. Most users with less than 5GB of saved Memories will not be affected.
Snapchat's new storage policy is set to change how users interact with the Memories feature. While some users express frustration, others may find the paid plans reasonable for preserving their content. The company has not yet revealed UK pricing, but the change is expected to be implemented globally.
