Dialing Down the Traditional Call: The Rise of Apps in Germany's Communication Landscape
Shrinking usage of both landline and cellular phones.
Step aside, landline and mobile calls, it's all about apps now! A staggering 89% of German call volume no longer relies on landlines or mobiles. Instead, applications like WhatsApp, Zoom, and Teams have taken over, even causing a dip in mobile call volume.
Last year, the minutes spent on landline calls decreased by 11% to 57 billion, and mobile calls saw a 4% drop, reaching 148 billion, according to the Federal Network Agency's annual report. The decline in landline calls was particularly noticeable, dropping by 14% in 2022 and 20% in 2023, due to the surging popularity of number-independent telecommunication services.
The usage of these as-a-service communication solutions has skyrocketed, with the call volume via apps surging from 175.1 billion minutes in 2023 to 196.7 billion minutes in the recent annual report. Instant messages sent via these services also saw an uptick, climbing from 891.4 billion to 901.9 billion.
App users are not just making calls but also chugging down more data. Landline data usage increased by 35GB per connection per month, averaging 322GB. Mobile data usage saw a slight rise, too, from 7.2 to 7.4 GB per month and SIM profile. LTE handled 88% of data traffic, 10% was handled by 5G, and the remaining 2% by GSM.
In terms of investment, the industry splurged a whopping 14.9 billion euros last year, mainly for fiber optic and mobile infrastructure expansion. This marks a 13% increase over the previous year.
Privacy, convenience, and the need for remote solutions have contributed to the rise of these communication apps. Telegram, which prioritizes privacy, has gained popularity among users seeking secure communication. Meanwhile, the ease of use and accessibility of apps across multiple devices have further fueled their popularity.
Top messaging apps in Germany include WhatsApp, Telegram, and Discord. While specific data on video conferencing apps isn't readily available, global leaders like Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams are likely playing their part in this shift, given their international recognition.
As we continue to navigate the digital age, apps offering messaging and video conferencing services are likely to dominate the communication landscape in Germany and beyond.
