Secret Alien Reference in Alien: Isolation: Discovering the Romulus Hidden Gem

Title: A Fresh Take on Fear: Alien: Romulus and the Legacy of Isolation

Alien: Romulus, with its reputation to establish itself as a worthy addition to the sci-fi franchise, seems to have hit the nail on the head. Director Fede Alvarez, inspired during his stint filming Don't Breathe, found an alarming source of terror in Alien: Isolation.

Speaking in an interview with GamesRadar, Alvarez revealed that Alien: Isolation's haunting atmospheric tone served as a beacon, inspiring him to create a movie as terrifying as the game.

"Alien: Isolation was a wake-up call," Alvarez shared with GamesRadar+, "demonstrating the extraordinary potential of Alien to scare the living daylights out of viewers today. That's why I could hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of bringing that creature and those environments back to life, all while petrifying audiences anew."

Not simply a fan of the tone, Alvarez also took visual cues from the game to create tense scenes for the audience. In fact, the visceral phone sequences found in Alien: Isolation, intended to leave players on edge, played a significant role in designing the movie's set pieces.

"You'll spot phones strategically scattered throughout the film," Alvarez stated, "creating an anxious anticipation for viewers similar to that felt by gamers whenever they see one in-game. In essence, every phone signifies a heart-stopping moment."

From the early signs, it seems Alvarez has managed a stellar job by combining the best elements from the series and the game while infusing his unique mark of dread-fueling practical effects techniques, just for good measure. Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16.
