SBB Drops Paper Reka Checks: Cashless Payments Only from October 23
From October 23, SBB bistros will no longer accept paper Reka checks. Only Reka cards will be taken. This change is part of SBB's move towards cashless payments, which has sparked criticism from consumer protection groups.
SBB is currently trialling cashless payments in train bistros on the IC51 line between Biel and Basel. This test, running from October 6 to December 13, only accepts credit/debit cards and mobile payments. Cash and paper Reka checks are not accepted during this period.
Consumer protection groups have criticized this shift, arguing that public services should be accessible to all, including those without smartphones or bank cards. However, SBB's move aligns with the broader trend away from cash. The railway company has already stopped accepting cash at station toilets.
To accommodate customers during the test, personalized vouchers can be bought with cash at SBB travel centers and are accepted at the bistros.
From October 23, SBB bistros will only accept Reka cards, not paper checks. This follows a trial of cashless payments on the IC51 line. While consumer groups raise concerns, SBB argues this move modernizes transactions and streamlines payment methods.
