Roblox Introduces a New Intellectual Property Licensing Service for Content Creators and Owners of Brands

Roblox, the global platform that brings millions of people together through shared experiences, has recently launched a new licensing platform called the Roblox License Manager and Licenses catalog. This innovative platform aims to facilitate collaborations between intellectual property rights holders and platform creators, offering a streamlined approach to licensing and a vast array of creative opportunities.

Traditionally, licensing IP for game development was a complex and time-consuming process. The License Manager, however, simplifies this by allowing rights holders to register and create IP licenses, proactively scan experiences for IP usage, and offer licenses directly to creators in days or hours rather than months.

Rights holders can utilize self-serve tools to customize license terms, including IP usage, content maturity, and revenue share. They can also manage revenue sharing in a more tailored and selective manner. Creators, on the other hand, can browse the Licenses catalog to find available IPs and apply for licenses, significantly reducing the negotiation period.

The platform launched with partnerships featuring IP from Lionsgate, Netflix, Sega, Kodansha, and other leading companies, offering franchises like Squid Game, Stranger Things, Twilight, and Like A Dragon for digital experience development. Roblox plans to onboard additional IP holders throughout the year and aims to make the License Manager accessible to all IP holders in the coming months.

Roblox's goal is to have 10% of global gaming content revenue flow through its ecosystem. To achieve this, the platform is used by various teams across 3 continents to find new projects to pitch, discover trending IP and competitive slates, and monitor competitive content profiles.

Leadership uses the website to find top distributors and content rights-holders, while sales and business development leads use it to find new projects to pitch. Production leaders use the website to find CoPro partners and their IP preferences, and sales leaders use it to find green-lit projects to pitch.

In 2024, creators on Roblox earned $923 million, and the company projects that this will exceed $1 billion in 2025. By simplifying the previously complex and time-consuming process of IP licensing, the new platform is expected to further boost the earnings of creators and contribute to Roblox's goal of becoming a significant player in the gaming content industry.

Roblox is committed to providing a safe and civil environment where individuals can imagine, create, and play together. The new licensing platform is just one more step in this direction, offering a platform for creativity and collaboration that is accessible, efficient, and tailored to the needs of both rights holders and creators.

  1. With the introduction of the Roblox License Manager, finance opportunities for real-estate, technology, and other businesses have expanded, as this platform enables more efficient and proactive licensing of intellectual property, particularly in the realm of investing in game development.
  2. As the Roblox License Manager matures and onboards more IP holders, there will be increasing potential for business collaborations across various industries, such as technology, real-estate, and entertainment, all contributing to Roblox's ambition of generating 10% of the global gaming content revenue.
