Revival of Jedi Power Battles in Fashionable Form
In case you're craving more epic Star Wars action post Star Wars Outlaws, have no fear! Aspyr, the masterminds behind countless classic Star Wars games, are back with a bang, introducing an updated version of the iconic '00s game, Star Wars: Episode 1 - Jedi Power Battles.
This exciting announcement came this very morning, setting the stage for the revitalized game's console and PC release early next year. Fans will be thrilled to battle their way through an alternate storyline based on The Phantom Menace, with legendary Jedi characters like Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon, and Mace Windu slashing their way through Trade Federation ships, the swamps of Naboo, and the deserts of Tatooine. The update includes popular additions, such as a training and versus mode, as seen in the Dreamcast port of the game.
In the original Dreamcast version of the game, players could even unlock and wield the double-bladed lightsaber with Darth Maul, a revolutionary feature back in the days of The Phantom Menace hype.
Speaking of unlockable characters, the new port offers a whopping 26 characters in total, ranging from the originally secret unlockables like Padmé, Captain Panaka, a battle droid, and none other than Darth Maul, to newcomers like a destroyer droid, a Weequay, a Tusken, and an Ishi Tib.
Power Battles, initially released at a time when the prequel Jedi's distinct characteristics were yet to be fully established, features some interesting unterscheidungen in the Jedi's lightsaber colors. Mace, for example, originally wielded a blue lightsaber before switching to his canonical purple blade in Attack of the Clones. Adi Gallia initially sported a red lightsaber in the game, a detail that is intriguing in retrospect!
While it may be a touch late for celebrations marking Phantom Menace's 25th anniversary year, it's great to have a modernized version of Jedi Power Battles playable on contemporary hardware. With over two decades passing since the game's original release, here's hoping this one avoids the launch issues experienced by Aspyr's recent Battlefront game ports.
Mark your calendars for January 23, when Star Wars: Episode 1 - Jedi Power Battles hits Playstation 4 and 5, Xbox Series S and X, and PC via Steam.
