Revenue of MTN Ghana surges 56% in first half, buoyed by data services and financial technology growth

In the first half of 2025, MTN Ghana, the leading mobile telecommunications company in the country, has achieved remarkable growth across various key indicators.

The company's monthly average data usage per subscriber jumped by 40.6%, reaching 14GB. This growth underscores the increasing demand for data services in Ghana and MTN's role in meeting this demand.

The number of active data users also rose by 11.0%, with 18.2 million subscribers now enjoying MTN's data services. This growth was mirrored in the total number of mobile subscribers, which increased by 6.5% to reach 30.2 million.

MTN Ghana's service revenue rose by 40.0% to GHS11.3 billion, with data revenue seeing the highest growth at 50.8% year-on-year. This growth is a testament to the company's successful efforts to expand its data services.

Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) for MTN Ghana climbed 45.5% to GHS6.6 billion, while the EBITDA margin improved to 58.4%. These figures indicate a stronger financial position for the company.

MTN Ghana's strategic plans involve deepening its fintech and data services, improving user experience, and executing its Ambition 2025 strategy aimed at leading digital solutions for Africa's progress. This includes restructuring its Mobile Money (MoMo) business in line with national financial regulations and MTN Group’s broader strategy.

As part of this, MTN Ghana plans to sustain growth by expanding fintech and data offerings while enhancing customer experience. The company aims to strengthen partnerships within the fintech ecosystem to drive scale, efficiency, and better service delivery.

Stephen Blewett, CEO of MTN Ghana, stated that the H1 2025 financial performance was achieved through strong commercial momentum and execution. He reaffirmed the company's medium-term guidance of mid-to-upper thirties growth in service revenue and EBITDA margins in the mid-to-high fifties.

MTN Ghana's commitment to shared value creation was also reiterated. During its flagship 21 Days of Y'ello Care volunteer campaign, over 200 women were trained in sustainable skills, and 100 youth received ICT training. The company also intensified its efforts around online child safety and digital literacy.

In terms of financials, MTN Ghana (Scancom PLC) reported a 55.8% year-on-year increase in profit after tax to GHS3.6 billion. The company paid GHS5.1 billion in direct and indirect taxes in the period, demonstrating its significant contribution to Ghana's economy.

The company's total capital expenditure for the period was GHS2.7 billion, reflecting its ongoing investment in network infrastructure and services. MTN Ghana confirmed that progress continues on the localisation of MobileMoney Ltd., aligning with its commitment to comply with national financial regulations.
