Reusable Satellite Platform Secures Pre-Seed Funding worth $4 Million (Lux Aeterna)
In a groundbreaking development, Colorado-based startup Lux Aeterna is developing the world's first fully reusable satellite bus, aiming to transform space operations and reduce costs by making satellite hardware as reusable as rockets.
The satellite bus, engineered for high reliability and designed to meet emerging demands from the U.S. Department of Defense, will be showcased in the company's pathfinder demonstration mission, named Delphi. Planned for launch in early 2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Delphi will perform its payload functions, re-enter Earth's atmosphere safely using a deployable heat shield, and then be recovered and refurbished for another flight.
The Falcon 9 first stage will also return following launch, emphasizing the reusability approach on both launch and satellite sides. This mission has attracted interest from multiple defence and commercial customers who intend to fly payloads on this first flight.
Lux Aeterna's CEO, Brian Taylor, has highlighted that the satellite and heat shield are co-designed for reusability, aiming to achieve multiple re-flights per platform with rapid turnaround and high reliability. While specific reuse metrics will depend on the mission profile, this approach is expected to unlock new mission profiles and revenue streams that were previously impossible due to single-use satellite architectures and long supply chain lead times for critical components.
