Retailer Dick's sees a 3% increase in sales, driven by a robust back-to-school season performance

Dick's Sporting Goods, the leading US-based sporting goods retailer, is consistently growing its sales, thanks to its expanding position as a casual apparel retailer, the introduction of new brands, and a stronger own-brand offering, according to GlobalData Managing Director Neil Saunders.

Despite a slight slowdown in sales growth, which could suggest a consumer pullback, Dick's is coming off a strong back-to-school season and preparing for the upcoming holiday season with confidence. In Q3, the company reported a 2.8% year-over-year increase in sales, totaling $3 billion, and a 1.7% increase in comps.

Dick's continues to roll out next-generation stores, having opened five such stores and two House of Sport experiential stores in the quarter. The economics of House of Sport stores, according to CEO Lauren Hobart, are very promising. Dick's plans to open ten more House of Sport stores in 2024.

The retailer is also reworking its stores to better suit shoppers by implementing technology, creating age-appropriate experiences, and integrating complementary shop-in-shops.

In an effort to strengthen its outdoor-focused retail strategy for profitable growth, Dick's is integrating its Moosejaw and Public Lands businesses. After acquiring Moosejaw from Walmart in early 2023, Dick's began closing most Moosejaw physical stores and its Michigan headquarters, moving operations to its Pittsburgh base starting February 2024. By August 2024, all Moosejaw stores were closed, and the Moosejaw website was shut down, with Moosejaw.com now redirecting to Publiclands.com, Dick's outdoor-focused subsidiary launched in 2021. This integration suggests that Dick's is folding Moosejaw's brand, inventory, and customer base into Public Lands to create a more unified and efficient outdoor retail offering under one platform.

The holiday season presents a wider competitive set for Dick's compared to the back-to-school season. However, the retailer is taking share from other retailers, especially department stores, due to its outperformance.

Dick's slightly raised its comparable sales outlook for the year, now expecting comps to be up 0.5% to 2%. As the retailer continues to innovate and adapt to the changing retail landscape, it remains a force to be reckoned with in the sporting goods industry.
