Freiburg Launches City-Wide Data Platform D:R:F for Smart Urban Development
The city of Freiburg has launched a new initiative called D:R:F, a city-wide data platform aimed at connecting and making accessible data from various sectors for administration, research, business, and citizens. Hosted exclusively in certified German data centers, the D:R:F initiative prioritizes data protection and security, ensuring data sovereignty for all involved.
Funded by the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building in collaboration with the KfW Bank with 8.3 million euros over five years, and with an additional 4.5 million euros contributed by the city of Freiburg, the D:R:F project is a significant step towards Smart City and data-driven urban development.
Mayor Martin Horn emphasizes that the D:R:F initiative is transparent, understandable, and community-oriented. It aims to facilitate participation and benefits urban development with a modern, data-driven approach.
Through D:R:F, citizens can access data on population, housing, and social indicators through the new district atlas. The platform provides insights into air quality, traffic conditions, and age distribution in neighborhoods, offering valuable information for decision-making and everyday life.
D:R:F is open to contributions from universities, companies, hospitals, or citizens. By encouraging collaboration and open data sharing, the initiative seeks to foster a vibrant ecosystem of innovation and progress.
Some potential applications of the D:R:F initiative include digital twins of the city, traffic or climate simulations, and barrier-free information search. The project DATEN:RAUM:FREIBURG, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), will further support these endeavors.
With the launch of D:R:F, Freiburg positions itself as a digital pioneer in Germany, embracing the future of urban development and harnessing the power of data for the betterment of its citizens and community.
