The Grande Panda 4x4 concept embodies the same indomitable spirit, coupled with modern electrified technology.
The automotive world is currently captivated by towering SUVs that seldom face anything more challenging than a shopping mall parking lot. The Grande Panda 4x4, however, is a refreshing departure, offering a small, genuine vehicle designed for rough terrain. Fiat describes the concept as a direct descendant of the 1980s workhorse, with a visual connection that is evident at first glance.
The maroon paint job is reminiscent of the popular Country Club edition from the '90s, while beige accents and classic steel wheels with Fiat center caps recreate the retro vibe. A roof rack equipped with a spare tire and a tool box suggests readiness for adventure right from the start.
Technical aspects become more intriguing with the Grande Panda 4x4 concept. It features an "electrified innovative rear axle" that enables all-wheel-drive capability. While specifics are scarce, it's likely that the system resembles the 28-horsepower rear electric motor found in other Stellantis products, such as the Jeep Avenger 4xe and Alfa Romeo Junior Ibrida Q4.
The concept is based on the electric version of the current Grande Panda rather than the mild-hybrid variant with its 1.2-liter turbo three-cylinder engine. This suggests a dual-motor setup with one electric motor per axle, providing through-the-road all-wheel drive. This demonstrates the adaptability of Stellantis's Smart Car Platform for all-wheel-drive applications, opening up possibilities for other compact cars within the corporate family.

While Fiat has not confirmed production plans for the Grande Panda 4x4, the company's European boss, Gaetano Thorel, hinted to Autocar that it might reach the road at some point in the future. The use of the term "manifesto" for the concept suggests serious intent behind the concept. If produced, the Grande Panda 4x4 could arrive in European dealerships as early as 2026. Unfortunately, given Fiat's limited American presence, US sales remain uncertain.
