In the late 19th century, two brothers from Dayton, Ohio, Orville and Wilbur Wright, made a groundbreaking achievement that revolutionised the world - they invented, built, and flew the world's first controlled, sustained, and engine-powered airplane. This historic moment took place on December 17, 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, with their aircraft, the Wright Flyer.

The Wright brothers' contributions to aviation were significant. They introduced the three-axis control system, a fundamental innovation that allows pilots to control the aircraft's pitch, roll, and yaw effectively, providing stable and maneuverable flight. Before powered flight, they built and tested gliders (1900–1902), learning how to maintain controlled flight by modifying wings and controls based on extensive experimentation. They also designed their own propellers optimised for powered flight and built a lightweight engine, making controlled powered flight possible. Additionally, they used wind tunnels to study aerodynamics and improve wing shapes and propellers.

The Wright brothers' focus was on pilot control and balance, rather than just power, which set them apart from other early experimenters. Their mechanical background in working with bicycles, printing presses, and machinery informed their innovative designs.

While others, such as Alexander Mozhaysky, a Russian admiral and aviation pioneer, made pioneering efforts in the field of aviation, the Wright brothers are considered the first creators of the practical airplane due to their successful controlled, sustained, powered flight and their innovations in flight control systems that became the foundation of modern aviation.

It is worth noting that Richard Pearse from New Zealand reportedly performed powered heavier-than-air flight attempts prior to the Wright brothers in 1903. However, his flights were less controlled, and his contributions did not achieve the practical controlled flight and aerodynamic control that the Wright brothers accomplished.

Alexander Mozhaysky, born in Finland to a Russian family, made significant contributions to shipbuilding and aviation. He served in the Baltic Fleet in 1850, undertook various missions around the Gulf of Finland during the Crimean War, and helped the return of Russian soldiers stranded in 1855. He also designed and built the sailing ship Heda. During a Far East expedition, Mozhaysky met Japanese businessmen and presented his steam engine invention to Japanese dignitaries. In 1881, the Department of Commerce and Manufactures granted Mozhaysky patents for the first invented airplane. Mozhaysky conducted various research on air and left many legacies in the field of aviation and shipbuilding, including the design of a monoplane in 1884.
