Meta to Utilize User Data for AI Training, Option for EU Users to Opt Out

Beginning this Tuesday, Meta will initiate the training of its AI tool, Meta AI, using public information from adult users within the European Union. According to the tech giant, posts, photos, comments, and other interactions through Facebook and Instagram applications will be included in the data collection.

The company stated, "We will use your interactions with Meta's AI features and your public information, such as posts and comments from accounts of people aged 18 or older, based on legitimate interests." As a result, affected users should have received an email announcing the change.

Users who wish to prevent their data from being used for this purpose can block Meta's access by navigating to the Privacy Center within their applications and selecting the "right to object" option. Alternatively, users can follow this link to complete the process. Upon approval of the objection, Meta assured that it will cease using the user's interactions with its AI features as well as their public information.

However, it's important to note that even if a user objects, Meta may still use information that appears publicly. For example, images shared in public could be processed.

Users have until May 27, 2025, to opt out, although expressing objection as soon as possible is advised. Furthermore, Meta does not guarantee that it will honor all opt-out requests and will review objections in accordance with relevant data protection laws.

  1. Meta's AI training, powered by data-and-cloud-computing technology, will utilize user interactions and public information, as announced in the email about changes to privacy settings.
  2. To prevent data-and-cloud-computing technology from being used for Meta's AI training, users can navigate to the Privacy Center within their applications and select the "right to object" option before May 27, 2025.
