The GPD Win 5, a highly-anticipated handheld gaming device, is set to hit the market in October 2023 (provided markets are confirmed). Powered by AMD's Strix Halo chip, this device offers a unique feature - an external, 80 Wh polymer lithium-ion battery.

Unlike many handhelds with internal batteries, the GPD Win 5's battery can be mounted on the back of the device or connected via a cable, providing flexibility for extended gaming sessions. This design choice not only allows for reduced weight during long gaming sessions but also improves repairability and battery replacement ease.

The external battery offers approximately 2 hours of continuous intensive gaming and up to 6 hours during light use. When not in use, the device can be powered directly from a 180 W power adapter.

The GPD Win 5 comes in two models: one with the AI Max 395 chip and another with the AI Max 385 chip, both with a 45-75 W TDP. Higher TDP in the GPD Win 5 results in higher battery draw and thermals.

The GPD Win 5's display is a 7-inch 120 Hz VRR screen, offering smooth and responsive gameplay. The higher-tier model, the 395, uses the Radeon 8060S, which is expected to provide better GPU performance compared to the Radeon 8050S used in the 390 model.

However, the exact CPU performance of the GPD Win 5 remains undisclosed. Initial tests suggest that the device's performance may be improved, but its actual performance remains to be seen as the device has not been tested extensively yet.

The GPD Win 5's design, featuring an external battery and AMD's Strix Halo chip, sets it apart from other handhelds, offering modularity and extended usability through battery swapping. With its anticipated release at Chinajoy 2025 in Shanghai, gaming enthusiasts eagerly await the opportunity to get their hands on this innovative device.
