Philippines inaugurates first hybrid agricultural-solar battery storage system, with PBBM presiding over the ceremony
President Marcos Turns On Philippines' First Hybrid Agro-Solar Power Plants
In a significant step towards a cleaner and sustainable future, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. led the ceremonial switch-on of the Citicore Solar Batangas 1 Power Plants. This historic event marked the country's first hybrid agro-solar and battery storage system.
Located in Batangas, the power plants, which include the Lumbangan and Luntal Power Projects, are expected to generate up to 197 megawatts of renewable energy. This clean energy will supply power to around 158,000 households, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by an estimated 265,000 tons annually.
This reduction is equivalent to removing thousands of vehicles from the road, contributing to a cleaner environment and a safer environment for all.
Beyond energy production, Citicore, the company behind these projects, is innovatively combining solar power generation with agriculture using agrivoltaics. This method, which is being used by Citicore, involves planting crops beneath and around solar panels, lessening land-use competition between agriculture and energy. This approach is expected to maximize land productivity, increase farmers' income, and further enhance food security.
The Citicore Solar Batangas 1 Power Plants project is part of Citicore's commitment to provide 5 gigawatts of clean energy by 2027. The project is also aligned with the country's goal of achieving a 50 percent renewable energy share by 2040.
The idea to develop the first hybrid agro-solar battery storage on the Philippines was initiated by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of the Philippines. President Marcos underscored the crucial role of renewable energy in providing a cleaner and sustainable power supply.
In his speech, President Marcos stated that in Batangas, the solar power demonstrates a long-term and clean path towards providing electricity for homes and industries. He also expressed support for Citicore's goal to provide 5 gigawatts of clean energy in the next 5 years.
The projects are supported by a 320 megawatt-hour battery storage system, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply.
With the successful launch of the Citicore Solar Batangas 1 Power Plants, the Philippines takes a significant step towards its renewable energy goals, providing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for all.
