OpenAI Unveils New ChatGPT App Ecosystem for 800M Users

OpenAI has revealed a new app ecosystem within ChatGPT, slated to debut later this year. This move enables developers to craft custom chat applications, reaching over 800 million users. The Apps SDK, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), is now open source.

The new ecosystem allows developers to create interactive, conversational apps with custom chat logic and interfaces. Apps can be activated by name and integrated seamlessly into conversations. OpenAI has already collaborated with several companies, including Booking.com, Canva, and Coursera, to bring their services into ChatGPT.

OpenAI will also share monetization details, including support for the Agentic Commerce Protocol for instant checkout within ChatGPT. Starting in 2023, ChatGPT users in the US will be able to purchase from Etsy merchants through the chat interface using Stripe Checkout, with Shopify merchants to be added soon. Formal app submissions, reviews, and publication will begin later this year, along with a directory for browsing and searching apps.

The Apps SDK is now available for developers to start creating conversational applications. All apps must adhere to OpenAI's policies, be audience-appropriate, and have clear third-party rules. Logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union can access these apps across all plans.
