OpenAI Becomes World's Most Valuable Company at $500 Billion

OpenAI has become the world's most valuable company, surpassing SpaceX, with a valuation of $500 billion. This milestone comes amidst a global surge in AI investment and a growing appetite for computing power.

From 2013 to 2024, private AI investment in the United States reached $470 billion, with nearly a quarter invested in the last year alone. Meanwhile, China's private AI investment over the same period totalled $119 billion. Despite concerns about an 'AI bubble', analysts remain optimistic about the sector's long-term potential.

OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, is at the forefront of this growth. It raised approximately $40 billion in March 2025, bringing its estimated valuation to around $300 billion. The company plans to spend over $100 billion by 2029, although turning a profit is still some way off.

The Stargate project, led by OpenAI, has secured $400 billion of the $500 billion planned by 2029 for Texas data centers. This is part of a broader trend, with AI's global computing footprint expected to reach 200 gigawatts by 2030, the annual equivalent of Brazil's electric consumption. Feeding AI's computing appetite will cost up to $500 billion annually in global data center investments through 2030.

Microsoft is the US company investing the largest amounts in AI technology, planning to invest around $30 billion in the UK over four years, with about half dedicated to cloud computing and AI infrastructure. This is part of a total of more than $40 billion in AI-related investments announced by US tech giants recently. AI-related spending is expected to reach approximately $1.5 trillion by 2025 and over $2 trillion in 2026, representing nearly 2 percent of global GDP.

OpenAI's rise to become the world's most valuable company reflects the explosive growth and potential of the AI sector. As AI's computing demands continue to grow, so too will the investments in data centers and infrastructure to support it.
