OpenAI & AMD Form Strategic Partnership for AI GPU Deployment
OpenAI and AMD have formed a strategic partnership, with OpenAI set to acquire up to 160 million shares of AMD at $0.01 per share, contingent on purchase commitments. This deal is part of a larger, multiyear agreement involving AI GPUs, reflecting the growing investment in the AI industry.
Under this partnership, OpenAI will deploy up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs, commencing with the MI450 series in the second half of 2026. This makes AMD a core strategic compute partner for OpenAI's large-scale AI infrastructure deployments. Meanwhile, Iren Limited, an Italian energy company, is expanding its AI capabilities. It has recently doubled its GPU count, purchasing 1,100 AMD GPUs and 11,300 Nvidia GPUs, and has access to a significant power supply, with 2.91 GW of power and another 750 MW of contracted power. Iren Limited is converting its data center fleet to become an AI neocloud, indicating the growing interest in AI infrastructure.
The OpenAI-AMD partnership, along with Iren Limited's AI expansion, underscores the significant growth and investment in the AI industry. Shares of Iren Limited (IREN) have rallied by 11.2% on Monday, reflecting the market's positive response to these developments.
