Observed the debut of GPD's Strix Halo, a portable gaming PC with an optional battery, yet my skepticism remains intact
The GPD Win 5, a new gaming handheld, is making waves in the market with its powerful performance and unique design. Powered by AMD's Strix Halo chip, this device aims to deliver top-tier gaming experience on the go.
The GPD Win 5 boasts an esports-grade 7-inch 120Hz display and is equipped with either the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 or 385 processors. However, its standout feature is the external battery pack, which securely connects to the back of the device and provides a high-voltage 4S cell with an 80Wh capacity. The combined weight of the device and battery is around 900g, making it somewhat less portable compared to other handheld gaming PCs.
The external battery design allows for substantial power delivery, but the device lacks an internal battery and requires the external pack or wall power to operate. This trade-off between portability and power is a deliberate choice to sustain extended gaming sessions at high graphics and refresh rates.
In terms of thermal management, the GPD Win 5 employs a dual-fan module with quad heat pipes capable of up to 70W cooling power. The external battery placement and additional air intake on the bottom edge of the handheld are engineered to optimize thermal performance and maintain the full capability of the powerful AMD processor.
While the release date and pricing for the GPD Win 5 are yet to be announced, the device has been showcased on the GPD YouTube channel. Meanwhile, other devices such as the Ayaneo Strix Halo handheld, the Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS ed., and the HP Omen 35L have been recognised as the best handheld gaming PC, best gaming laptop, and best gaming PC respectively in various lists.
It's worth noting that the GPU performance of the Ayaneo Strix Halo handheld device is currently unknown, and the 8050S GPU performance in the Ryzen AI Max 390 was not impressive.
James Bentley, a PC gaming writer who started writing about gaming in 2019, is one of the many voices discussing the potential of the GPD Win 5. As more information about this device becomes available, it's clear that the GPD Win 5 is a promising contender in the portable gaming market.
