Nvidia's GeForce Now undergoes significant technical upgrade - maturing of cloud gaming technology

Nvidia GeForce Now Unveils Major Upgrade, Boosting Performance and Visual Fidelity

Nvidia's GeForce Now is set to undergo a significant transformation, with the service set to receive a major upgrade in September. The update will bring a host of improvements, enhancing performance, visual fidelity, and library size.

At the heart of the upgrade is the integration of Nvidia's Blackwell architecture, which equips GeForce Now with GeForce RTX 5080-class GPUs. This hardware overhaul delivers an impressive 62 teraflops of compute power and a 48GB frame buffer, enabling 5K resolution streaming at 120 FPS. The new setup offers frame rates up to 2.8 times faster than previous-generation servers and more than three times the performance of a PlayStation 5 Pro.

A standout feature of the update is the introduction of a Cinematic-Quality Streaming mode. This mode improves visual sharpness, colour accuracy, and network adaptation for a superior streaming experience. It's designed to deliver a cinematic-quality viewing experience, perfect for gamers who demand the best visuals.

Other key enhancements include the support for DLSS 4, Multi-Frame Generation, and NVIDIA Reflex. These features aim to boost streaming quality and responsiveness across compatible devices. The update also introduces an Install-to-Play feature, allowing Ultimate members to stream or install games on cloud storage. This expansion of the game library nearly doubles the available titles to over 4,500 games, including high-profile upcoming releases like Borderlands 4 and The Outer Worlds 2.

The upgrade also improves connectivity, integrating with advanced CPUs (AMD Zen 5) and networking tech (NVIDIA ConnectX-7 SmartNICs). This partnership will help improve low-latency connectivity across broadband and 5G networks.

The upgrade will also improve responsiveness, allowing for 1080p streaming with up to 30 millisecond click to pixel response times. However, to fully enjoy the Cinematic Quality Streaming mode, a broadband connection of at least 100 Mbps is required.

Nvidia GeForce Now Ultimate subscribers will see further enhancements due to the integration with Nvidia's Blackwell architecture. The cost of the GeForce Now Ultimate membership remains the same, at £19.99 / $19.99 per month or £99.99 / $99.99 for six months' membership.

Over the past decade, the technology behind GeForce Now has improved considerably, allowing it to outperform many rivals, including Google's Stadia. The upcoming enhancements are set to further solidify GeForce Now's position as a leading cloud gaming service.
