In a notable development for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in Germany, the Munich Airport is set to open a new charging park with 275 charging points. This expansion could potentially shake up the current ranking of states in terms of total charging points.

As of August 1, North Rhine-Westphalia leads the way with 34,063 publicly accessible charging points, according to the Federal Network Agency. However, the operation of the Munich Airport charging park could potentially give Bavaria the lead.

Since April 2017, Bavaria has had more charging points than North Rhine-Westphalia, despite the latter having significantly more inhabitants and cars. This trend has continued, with the total number of charging points in Bavaria increasing, while it has grown more significantly in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Bavaria also leads in the total installed charging capacity with 1.38 gigawatts, compared to 1.28 gigawatts in North Rhine-Westphalia. In terms of fast charging points, Bavaria still leads with 8,075, compared to 7,739 in North Rhine-Westphalia.

The charging park at Munich Airport, upon operation, could potentially surpass North Rhine-Westphalia's total number of charging points. This could mark a significant shift in the ratio of charging points between the two states.

The location, specifically in the parking garage P44 opposite the LabCampus, started operation on September 16, 2025, and is set to become the largest publicly accessible charging station in Bavaria.

Baden-Württemberg is currently in third place with 29,946 charging points, as it has been for some time. If successful, this charging park could give Bavaria the highest total number of charging points in the short term.

The expansion of charging infrastructure in the west has progressed more quickly compared to Bavaria. The opening of the Munich Airport charging park could potentially impact the competition between Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia in terms of charging infrastructure.

It's important to note that the charging park at Munich Airport, upon operation, could potentially make Bavaria the state with the most charging points, temporarily. The competition between the states in the EV charging landscape is likely to continue as both aim to improve their infrastructure and cater to the growing number of electric vehicle users.

This development underscores the ongoing efforts to improve EV charging infrastructure across Germany, a crucial step towards a more sustainable future.
